Bujumbura, Burundi - On Monday, March 10, 2025, Burundian mining association FANALEK officially presented President Évariste Ndayishimiye with the discovery of a new titanium deposit on national soil - an announcement that could mark a turning point in Burundi's economic history.
According to Jean Baptiste Ntakirutimana, head of FANALEK (the Association of Mining and Quarry Operators of Burundi), the deposits have been identified in two strategic locations: the commune of Bukinanyana in Cibitoke province, and in the province of Rumonge.
Titanium - prized for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance - is a critical material in high-value industries including aerospace, medical devices, and electronics manufacturing. Its average market price currently stands at approximately USD 4/kg.
